When a Parent is Seriously Ill
Caring for the Elderly: a guide for caregivers

"When a Parent Is Seriously III"

Jewish Family Service’s When a Parent Is Seriously Ill: Practical Tips for Helping Parents and Children. Written by Leigh Collins and Courtney Nathan, both clinical social workers, the book offers practical advice to families confronted with a parent’s serious illness. Using real-life experiences collected through interviews with families, the authors offer suggestions for handling the challenges families face during times of crisis.

Some of the questions addressed in the book are:

  • How do I tell my children that I’m sick?
  • How do I take care of them when I’m not feeling well?
  • How do I figure out how well my children are dealing with my illness, and how can I help them?
  • How do I keep my relationships with family members healthy throughout my illness?
  • What happens if my illness should become terminal?
The writing and publication of When a Parent is Seriously Ill was made possible by a grant from
The Dora Ferber Family Foundation of Houma, Louisiana, a supporting foundation of
The Jewish Endowment Foundation.
